I don't think I need to bring up anything else about the New York Yankees' loss in the Subway Series this weekend, dropping two of three against the New York Mets.
To put things as nicely as possible, this was the worst the Yankees played all season, and really showed a lot of the flaws on this roster.
That isn't to say that there are going to be massive changes or that things are going to change a ton over the next few weeks to months, but a lot of the Yankees' issues were shown in a rather big moment.
Losing games is one thing, but losing to this Mets team is flat-out inexcusable.
And the craziest part is that the Yankees had the Mets in a position they typically don't succeed in. With a chance to win the series on a Sunday, leading heading into the ninth inning with David Bednar on the mound, it seemed like this game was over and the Yankees were going to win the series.
However, instead of the Mets losing their 97th consecutive game when down after eight innings, as they had not done since the 2024 Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Yankees allowed them to change that.
“From Alonso’s blast in the ’24 Wild Card Series until Sunday, the Mets had lost 96 consecutive games when trailing after eight, including the postseason. And for the first eight innings Sunday, they didn’t exactly look like a team primed to buck that trend.
“Midway through the afternoon, Bo Bichette dropped a popup to pour gasoline on what became a four-run Yankees rally in the sixth. Mets starter Freddy Peralta again could not record more than 15 outs, and when seldom-used long man Sean Manaea entered, the early results were everything but good,” Anthony DiComo of MLB.com wrote.
As crazy as it might sound, this is definitely a series that can get the Mets going, no matter how anybody wants to put it. The Mets still have a lot of work to do, and winning one series against the Yankees isn't going to change their entire season. However, it almost feels like there's a refrigerator off their back now, and they can go out and play the type of baseball that people were expecting them to when entering the season.
It's unfortunate that the Yankees ended up losing this series because, for a lot of it, they were the better team. However, New York had some uncharacteristic struggles, leading to its worst series loss of the season.
