The Chicago Cubs absolutely need to add an arm or two at the trade deadline. Depending on the health situation of some of their starters prior to the deadline, there's definitely an argument that the Cubs are going to have to add more than one starter as well.
If Chicago has dealt with one problem throughout the year, it's been its inability to stay healthy on the bump.
Not having starting pitching in October is a recipe for disaster, and something that Jed Hoyer simply has to understand.
Hoyer will probably have a slew of options to choose from, and with the latest from Bleacher Report, which predicted that Sandy Alcantara will be the top trade candidate on the Marlins, the Cubs definitely need to get involved and see what he's going for.
“It's not often that the most likely trade candidate is also the most coveted player on the roster, but the only Marlin who will be a free agent in six months is Pete Fairbanks, and he's on the IL with a 10.00 ERA. The possible curveball here is a scenario in which the "second place in the NL East" Marlins are legitimately in the postseason hunt at the deadline and decide to hold tight to Alcantara.
“As of Tuesday morning, though, FanGraphs gives them just a 10.5 percent chance of making the playoffs,” Kerry Miller of BR wrote.
The unfortunate part for Chicago is that, while it needs an elite starter like Alcantara, he's likely to be one of the more expensive players on the market. On the flip side, the Cubs need a lot of help in the rotation, and at some point, they can't worry about losing prospects if they believe they have a real chance to win a World Series.
