Why the Cleveland Guardians Traded for Patrick Bailey

Significant trades involving everyday players at the beginning of May are rare to begin with. Throw the Cleveland Guardians into that equation, and it’s almost an unheard-of scenario.

Well, the Guardians did the unexpected on Saturday and dealt a pitching prospect and a draft pick to the San Francisco Giants for catcher Patrick Bailey, and optioned Bo Naylor to Triple-A.

Why a catcher? Why Bailey? Why Now?

President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti did his best to answer those questions on Saturday after the trade was made official.

"We didn't set out necessarily to acquire catching, but this was an opportunity that we felt made sense because it in our view, will help us win games and help us pursue our goal of winning World Series," explained Antonetti on Saturday.

Even though the Guardians exec insists Cleveland wasn't pursuing catching at the time, Bailey has been someone on the Guardians' radar for the past few seasons. In fact, the organization has tried to trade for him in the past, but nothing came to fruition until now.

There's also no question that Bailey fits perfectly with the type of catcher Cleveland has valued in the past: defense.

"We feel we've acquired one of, if not the best, defensive catchers in baseball, and we now have an opportunity to pair him with Austin [Hedges] and David [Fry], and in our view, that is the best defensive catching staff to help us win games," continued Antonetti.

"It's a group that's incredibly committed to help and get the most out of pitchers and we think that the additional of Patrick will only help us be stronger in that area. He has a great reputation as a leader and a teammate. Obviously he's a back-to-back gold glove winner been a finalist for the Platinum Glove award and by all accounts is an elite defender a great teammate and a leader that will fit in seamlessly at our Clubhouse."

The Guardians have always been an organization that values defensive-minded and game-managing catching. It’s why Yan Gomes, Roberto Perez, and Hedges had such a long leash with their output over the last decade.

There’s no better catcher in terms of defense in the sport than Bailey is right now. The Guardians had an opportunity to acquire him, and they took it.
