The Edmonton Oilers have not officially announced a coaching change yet, but all signs point toward a major decision arriving sooner rather than later.
According to Mark Spector of Sportsnet, head coach Kris Knoblauch is expected to be fired, potentially before the end of the day.
"As of this moment – 11:37 a.m. MT – Kris Knoblauch has not been fired by the Edmonton Oilers," Spector posted on X. "We are expecting that to happen, however, likely by day's end."
If confirmed, the move would mark a shocking ending to Knoblauch's three-season run in Edmonton. The 47-year-old coach helped guide the Oilers to back-to-back Stanley Cup Final appearances in 2024 and 2025, including a heartbreaking seven-game loss to the Florida Panthers in his first season behind the bench.
Despite those playoff runs, the Oilers took a major step backward this past season. Defensive issues became a constant problem, goaltending remained unstable, and expectations around the franchise reached another level with Connor McDavid now just two seasons away from unrestricted free agency.
Knoblauch would finish his Oilers tenure with a 135-77-21 regular-season record and a 31-22 playoff mark. His .624 points percentage ranks among the best in franchise history.
The speculation surrounding his future intensified even further after reports surfaced that Edmonton had interest in interviewing Bruce Cassidy for the team's coaching vacancy, before Knoblauch had even officially been dismissed.
Now, it appears the Oilers are preparing for a dramatic new direction at the most critical moment of the McDavid era.
