The San Antonio Spurs have demonstrated a significant advantage over the Minnesota Timberwolves in their second-round series. In addition to taking a 3-2 lead into Friday night’s potential clincher in Minnesota, the Spurs have won their three games by an average of 24.7 points. The Timberwolves have won their two games by an average of 3.5 points.

Point differential is not always an indicator of superiority in sports, but in this case, the Spurs have advantages in speed, quickness, defensive ability and relentlessness. Additionally, the presence of Victor Wembanyama gives them a player who can’t be neutralized by the Timberwolves.

Wembanyama has the ability to impact nearly every drive to the rim as well as many outside shots. He gives Chris Finch’s T-Wolves something to think about on nearly every possession, and that’s an issue that weighed on that team in their three losses.

However, Minnesota has shown the ability to steal a victory on the road and outfight the Spurs down the stretch in Game 4 at home. They are desperate to stay alive, so look for Anthony Edwards, Ayo Dosunmu, Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels to come through with one of their best efforts of the postseason.

The Spurs are a complete team, and Wembanyama gets plenty of help from Stephon Castle, De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper and Devin Vassell. Mitch Johnson’s Spurs know how much this game means to Minnesota, so look for the Spurs to be prepared for the home team’s best effort.

The Timberwolves have had success in this series when Edwards has been on his game and he has had support from his teammates. The Minnesota superstar can’t do it by himself because the Spurs have too much depth and aggressiveness on the defensive end to let one player take advantage of them for 48 minutes.

When the Timberwolves pulled off the upset in Game 1, Edwards came off the bench as a result of his earlier knee injury and contributed 18 points. Randle scored 21 while McDaniels and Terrence Shannon each added 16 points. Edwards played like a superstar in the Game 4 win with 36 points and 6 rebounds, but Naz Reid provided a big assist with 15 points and 9 rebound while Rudy Gobert had 11 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and a blocked shot

The Spurs blew the Timberwolves out in Game 4 behind Wembanyama’s 27 points, 17 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Keldon Johnson provided a big assist with 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting while Fox added 18 points. When Wembanyama has a dominant game, the Timberwolves know they are in for a long night.

The intimidating center knows the job is not finished yet. “As I said, the job is not finished,” Wembanyama said. “We have one more game to get to the conference finals.”

Spurs vs. Timberwolves Prediction and Pick

The Spurs will advance to the Western Conference Finals if and when they can eliminate the Timberwolves. While they have been dominant in their victories, they are going to have to show they can win the decisive game in the series on the road if they want to avoid playing in an all-or-nothing seventh game.

The Spurs have plenty of confidence after winning by 29 points in Game 5, but this will be a different entity. The Timberwolves are fighting to keep their season alive, and they can draw some confidence from their performances in the two victories they have had in the series to this point.

The likelihood is that the Timberwolves will be fully prepared and will come through with their best start in any game to this point in the series. However, it will take more than a good start to come out with the series-tying triumph. They are going to have to withstand a huge effort from Wembanyama and the relentless San Antonio defense.

The Spurs will have at least one strong run in this game, and potentially more than that. Look for San Antonio to outlast the home team and win this game and advance to the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Final Timberwolves-Spurs Prediction & Pick: San Antonio Spurs -4.5 (-115); UNDER 218.5 (-108).
