The reigning kings of college basketball just received the ultimate spark plug for a potential repeat.
Michigan Wolverines junior point guard and NCAA Tournament breakout sensation Elliot Cadeau has officially withdrawn his name from the 2026 NBA Draft. He will return to Ann Arbor for his senior season, his agent, Drew Gross of WME Agency, confirmed Saturday.
The announcement, initially reported by CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein, is one that doesn't come as much surprise, but yet equal excitment. While Cadeau’s draft-testing process was largely viewed as an informational scouting mission, cementing his return instantly positions head coach Dusty May’s squad as a definitive frontrunner to hoist the hardware once again in 2027.
From Question Marks to Most Outstanding Player
Cadeau’s journey to college basketball immortality has been nothing short of a movie. After spending his first two collegiate seasons at North Carolina, the 6-foot-2 floor general entered the transfer portal last spring looking for a fresh start. He found it in Ann Arbor under Dusty May, and the synergy was instant.
During the 2025–26 regular season, Cadeau was the engine behind Michigan’s explosive offense, averaging 10.5 points and 5.9 assists while starting all 40 games. But it was during the NCAA Tournament where the New Jersey native transformed into an undisputed superstar.
Cadeau elevated his game to another stratosphere in March and April, averaging:
-
12.3 points per game
-
7.5 assists per game
-
3.7 rebounds per game
-
1.7 steals per game
He shot a blazing 38.7% from beyond the arc across Michigan's six tournament games. His postseason masterclass culminated in a spectacular 19-point performance against UConn to secure a 69-63 victory, delivering Michigan its first national championship since 1989. For his heroic efforts, Cadeau was awarded the Final Four Most Outstanding Player (MOP).
"Last year I was really down on myself, a lot of people doubted me," Cadeau reflected after cutting down the nets in Indianapolis. "And I'm just so proud of myself for me to be able to say I was the Most Outstanding Player and win a National Championship at the same time."
What His Return Means for the Wolverines' Repeat Hopes
Securing an elite, battle-tested point guard is the rarest luxury in modern college basketball. By choosing to spend his senior year in the Maize and Blue, Cadeau provides coach Dusty May with the ultimate on-court general to lead another deep March Madness run.

1. Continuity in a Chaotic Era
In the age of the transfer portal and immediate NIL departures, roster continuity is incredibly rare. Cadeau's decision gives Michigan a stabilizing force who already perfectly understands May’s high-octane offensive system. His ability to orchestrate the break, limit turnovers, and create open looks ensures the Wolverines will boast a top-tier offense from day one.
2. Elite Perimeter Defense
Beyond his elite distribution—highlighted by a staggering, modern-program-record 14-assist debut against Oakland last November—Cadeau's perimeter defense is suffocating. His knack for disrupting passing lanes and locking down opposing ball-handlers gives Michigan a crucial identity on the defensive end.
3. Championship DNA
You cannot quantify the value of having a point guard who has stared down the brightest lights in the sport and won. When games tighten up in late February and March, Cadeau’s poise and championship pedigree will be the calming influence a target-backed Michigan team needs.
Looking Ahead to 2026-27
Cadeau used his pre-draft process perfectly. He attended the G League combine, held workouts with NBA franchises like the New York Knicks, and gathered vital feedback on what he needs to improve to solidify his stock for the 2027 NBA Draft.
Now, he returns to school with a clear checklist: continue sharpening his perimeter jump shot and show NBA scouts he can consistently replicate his blistering postseason shooting numbers over an entire 30+ game schedule.
With their MOP point guard back at the helm, the road to the 2027 National Championship officially runs right through Ann Arbor. Expect the Wolverines to be a fixture at the very top of every preseason Top 25 poll as they prepare to run it back.
