The Boston Red Sox must make a huge statement to escape the American League East's cellar this weekend.
After dropping two of three games to both the Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies, the Red Sox face a steep interleague challenge. They embark on a three-game road series against the Atlanta Braves, who look like a legitimate World Series contender.
Boston has followed a 2025 playoff bid with a lethargic 18-25 start. Atlanta, on the other hand, has come storming back from a disappointing 76-win season to go 30-14.
Along with boasting baseball's best record, the Braves also wield MLB's highest run differential (+91). Even with MVP outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. sidelined, the Braves brandish the game's highest team OPS (.779).
Matt Olson is enjoying an MVP-caliber start, entering the Red Sox series with 14 home runs and a .294/.371/.629 slash line. Drake Baldwin leads all National League catchers in home runs (11) and fWAR (1.8).
Ozzie Albies and Michael Harris are both enjoying bounce-back campaigns, and former Red Sox first baseman Dominic Smith has delivered an unlikely boost by batting .353/.380/.529 in 93 plate appearances.
With 61 home runs, Atlanta nearly doubles Boston's 31. The matchup poses a stark contrast, as the Braves hold a nine-game lead in the NL East while the Red Sox trail the Rays by 10.5 games in the AL East.
However, there is one bright spot for Boston. A reeling lineup won't have to worry about facing former Red Sox ace Chris Sale, who improved his ERA to 1.96 on Thursday.
The Red Sox instead open the series against Spencer Strider, who will make his third start of the 2026 campaign. They'll then look to spoil a hot stretch from Bryce Elder, who flaunts a 1.81 ERA through nine outings a year after posting a 5.30 ERA. Grant Holmes (4.35 ERA) will start Sunday at Truist Park.
The marquee matchup presents a pivotal moment for Boston to right the ship. While the offense especially needs to improve, rookies Connelly Early and Payton Tolle can put everyone on notice by taming a dangerous Atlanta lineup.
