Newcastle Linked to Lecce’s Center-Back in Potential Serie A Deal

Newcastle United are monitoring Lecce defender Tiago Gabriel ahead of a possible summer transfer as they prepare for a defensive-line rebuild.

“Newcastle United are reportedly keeping tabs on Lecce’s young defender Tiago Gabriel ahead of a potential summer move,” Football Place reported on May 7.

The interest comes as uncertainty surrounds the future of Fabian Schar, whose contract expires at the end of the season and is likely to leave on a free come July. On top of that, Kieran Trippier is also leaving as a free agent, and the likes of Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento could also be sold, depending on the offers arriving at Newcastle’s table.

Gabriel has emerged as a potential long-term option for the middle of the Magpies’ defense after a strong campaign in Italy.

The 21-year-old has made 36 appearances across all competitions for Lecce, and according to the original report, he’s attracted interest from different Premier League clubs, including Newcastle and Brentford.

“According to Portuguese reports, the 21-year-old is also being watched closely by Juventus and AC Milan,” the report added.

Given his statistics, it’s fair to assume Lecce will try to squeeze the last penny in a potential sale, with Transfermarkt currently valuing the defender at a for-now affordable €15 million.
