The New York Mets are having a nightmare 2026 MLB season. Coming into the year, they were top World Series contenders. Now, they might miss the playoffs by a wide margin.
At 14-23, the Mets are in danger of falling well out of the playoff race. And there might be a date coming up soon that indicates when the Mets shift gears from contenders to sellers at the MLB Trade Deadline.
According to Bruce Levin of 670 The Score, the Mets seemingly have set a deadline for the team to turn things around this season before a fire sale.
"According to industry sources, the Cubs are one of the teams the Mets have talked to about acquiring RHP Freddy Peralta," Levin reports. "June 1st is a target time for the Mets to either get back into the race or move the soon-to-be free agent."
With the Mets' deadline for turning the season around being June 1st, they have just 22 games to try and right the ship before there's a chance to trade away their players.
Mets must turn things around by June 1 to avoid potential fire sale
Peralta is the only one Levin is reporting could be on the move following the realization that the Mets get after the June 1st deadline.
However, he might not be the only one the Mets look to part with this year. David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Kodai Senga, Christian Scott, Sean Manaea, and many others might also look to be on the move if things don't turn around by June.
The extent of a sell-off is a bit unknown, as beyond Peralta, the Mets might try to keep much of their roster to try to contend in 2027.

However, it's too soon to rule out a true fire sale for the Mets by this year's trade deadline. While the June 1st date might set the deadline for reality to hit the Mets, they would still have over two months before the trade deadline hits.
In that time, they might struggle a bit more, receive offers on players they may not have initially considered moving, and then turn it into a massive fire sale.
If 2026 is going to be a total disaster, the Mets should look to set themselves up for success in 2027 and beyond.
Of course, there's still time for the Mets to right this ship and be contenders. But if things don't turn around soon, a fire sale might be on the horizon for the Mets this year.
