Joe Gomez Admits Liverpool Must Respond After Aston Villa Setback
Liverpool’s Champions League hopes will go to the final day after a damaging 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa left Arne Slot’s side fifth and still searching for certainty.
Gomez accepts costly Liverpool errors
Joe Gomez did not dress it up. Speaking after the match, he admitted: “Yeah, in so many ways. We cost ourselves a big opportunity today. We know that. It sums up our year, with it being in our hands and errors that are avoidable at pivotal points in the game where we could have got momentum. At the end of the day, it’s still in our hands [qualifying for the Champions League], the goal remains the same. We’ve just got to do the job next week now.”
That was the key point. Liverpool were not overrun for long periods at Villa Park. They had phases of control, Virgil van Dijk twice scored with headers, and there were moments when the game looked recoverable.
Yet Aston Villa punished lapses ruthlessly. Morgan Rogers struck before half-time, Ollie Watkins scored twice, and John McGinn added another as Villa exposed Liverpool’s concentration issues.

Aston Villa punish fine margins
Gomez felt Liverpool had control before the opener, but he also recognised how fragile that control became.
“It felt that way, it felt we had control. It’s just frustrating because it’s lapses in concentration. Something that’s highlighted, we know: they’re great at set-pieces. They’ve got a reputation for doing routines and doing things outside the box, and we knew that. We had to be focused.”
This was not simply about effort. It was about decision-making, awareness, and composure. Against a well-drilled Aston Villa side, those details matter. Liverpool knew the danger, yet still allowed the hosts to turn key moments into goals.
Champions League race goes to Brentford
For Liverpool, the equation is now blunt. Beat Brentford at Anfield and secure Champions League football. Fail, and a season that began with the authority of defending Premier League champions could end with a far more uncomfortable conversation.
Gomez understood the stakes, saying: “It’s fine margins in the Premier League and that adds to it [the frustration]. It is what it is now, we can’t sit here and feel sorry for ourselves, we just have to do the job. We know what we have to do next weekend and we have to beat Brentford at home.”
Anfield must drive final response
Liverpool have injuries, fatigue and pressure to manage, but Gomez believes the squad must respond together.
“It’s a long week. Obviously we’ve got a lot of injuries but we’ve got to band together. We know we have to give the supporters something to support in how we play and how we approach the game. Hopefully we end the season on a positive note – that’s the goal. That goal doesn’t change from today and we know what we have to do.”
For Slot, Gomez and Liverpool, there is no mystery now. Aston Villa exposed the problem. Brentford will decide the consequence.
