Max Verstappen finally got his wish. He raced the Nurburgring 24 Hours. Naturally, seeing the reigning champion take on the “Green Hell” sparked some ideas across the F1 paddock. Nineteen-year-old Mercedes star Kimi Antonelli recently admitted he wanted a piece of the action. He even floated the idea of teaming up with Verstappen for an endurance run.
Mercedes slammed that door shut immediately.
Speaking at the Nurburgring this past weekend, Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord laid down the law. He confirmed Antonelli is strictly banned from racing the Nordschleife. The official team line is predictable. Lord claimed the young Italian needs to keep his “full focus” entirely on Formula 1 (via Motorsports.com).
Corporate Excuse or a Darker Reality for Mercedes
That is the polite corporate excuse. The reality is much darker. Mercedes is operating on pure paranoia. And we don’t blame them. Because anyone who has been around Formula 1 long enough knows the ghost of Robert Kubica still haunts the grid.
Back in 2011, Kubica was a generational talent. He was widely considered a future world champion and was heavily linked to a Ferrari seat. And his team let him run the Ronde di Andora rally in his spare time just for fun. But what happened next? That still haunts many fans. He hit a guardrail, and the crash partially severed his right arm.
And just like that, one of the most promising F1 careers of the modern era was permanently derailed. Mercedes management knows exactly what is at stake this year. Antonelli isn’t just having a solid sophomore season. He is currently leading the 2026 World Championship. You can pretty much call him the Silver Arrows’ golden ticket with the way he is racking up pole positions and race wins.
The Nordschleife takes no prisoners. It is narrow, blind, and relentlessly dangerous. Putting your franchise driver in a GT3 car on that specific track in the middle of a title fight borders on corporate malpractice.
Red Bull lets Verstappen run endurance races because his legacy is completely secure. He already has the hardware. Antonelli, on the other hand, is currently carrying the entire future of the Mercedes F1 operation.
Mercedes isn’t worried about Antonelli losing focus. They are terrified of losing their driver to a guardrail. Until he puts a world title on the shelf, the simulator is the only place he will be driving the Green Hell.
