If Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon does not end up at Bayern Munich this summer, one of the biggest questions facing Vincent Kompany could become very simple: should Jamal Musiala spend more time on the wing again?
On paper, it makes a lot of sense. Bayern still would need a player to challenge Luis Díaz and Serge Gnabry, and Lennart Karl would be back to man the No. 10 position. Musiala remains the club’s most gifted dribbler and arguably its best one-v-one attacker. Putting him on the wing instantly gives Bayern someone capable of breaking defensive structures without needing perfect buildup play.
There is also a practical side to it. Bayern’s attacking midfield options are much deeper than their wing depth right now. If Gordon does not arrive, Bayern might simply need Musiala’s creativity on the flank more than they need him permanently in the middle.
That said, there is a real argument against the move as well — especially any potential guarantees made during Musiala’s contract negotiations that pertained to his position. There were rumors that part of the agreement was reliant on Musiala being the team’s attacking midfielder.
Musiala’s ability to receive between the lines, combine in tight spaces, and dictate attacking tempo has grown tremendously over the last two seasons. There is also the physical burden that comes with wing play — more tracking back, more sprints, and more isolation battles.
The ideal solution might be flexibility rather than a permanent switch. Bayern could start Musiala centrally in some matches and move him wide depending on opponent, injuries, or game state. Modern elite attacks are fluid anyway, and Musiala is talented enough to thrive in multiple roles.
Still, if Bayern misses out on Gordon and does not sign another top winger, the idea of Musiala returning to the flank may go from tactical option to outright necessity.
Would you move Musiala back to the wing, or keep him in the middle no matter what?
