Georgia baseball defeated Tennessee in SEC play on Sunday after a catch at the wall abruptly brought the game to an end — much to the chagrin of the Volunteers, who had already started celebrating thinking they had taken the lead.
In the top of the ninth inning, with two out and Georgia leading by a run, Tennessee pinch hitter Stone Lawless had a chance to give his team the lead. And he thought he did it. On the second pitch, Lawless connected with the ball, sending it flying into deep left field, with a chance at a go-ahead, two-run home run.
One problem: It wasn’t a home run. As the ball raced toward the wall, Georgia outfielder Cole Johnson was there to nab it for the final out, securing the 8-7 win for the Bulldogs.

The result was a little extra awkward for Lawless, who had already slammed his bat to the ground, pointing to the dugout in celebration of his grand accomplishment. Teammate Jay Abernathy, on deck at the time, jumped and yelled in delight.
Instead, the game was just … over.
Georgia’s win capped a three-game home series against Tennessee over the weekend. Though the Volunteers took the first game of the series, the Bulldogs went on to win 4-2 on Saturday before picking up the series win Sunday.
Georgia entered the week ranked No. 8 in the NCAA’s Top 25, while Tennessee was ranked No. 19.
