The WNBA ratified a new collective bargaining agreement that has completely changed things for the better for its athletes and franchises. However, as great as it is that the players are being recognized and compensated more fairly, it’s still a professional sports league.
A brutal part of the reality of professional sports is that there are a limited number of roster spots, as fan-favorite Kate Martin found out after being cut from the Golden State Valkyries squad last week.
“It was not easy at all. Yeah. Sorry. Um, it happened on Wednesday and like, obviously it’s a business decision,” Martin said. “That’s what professional sports is. It’s a business. And, um, you know, I just had to do what was best for me and my career.
“And, uh, sorry about that, by the way. Um, and so that was, I just felt this was the best decision for me and I’m very, very excited to be here, 1000%. And, um, yeah, I’m definitely gonna give it my all, but yeah, that process wasn’t easy. And now I feel like I can relate to a lot more people on, you know, a level that maybe I never wanted to be able to relate on, but it’s only going to help me as a leader and as a person going forward.”
Reality of Pro Sports
On Tuesday, former Atlanta Dream player Holly Winterburn became one of the players Martin now relates to.
“I thought my welcome to the W moment would happen on the court, not as I’m getting on the bus for my first ever game. But that’s the reality of this business & I will always be grateful for the opportunity Atlanta gave me,” Winterburn wrote on her Instagram Story, ahead of the Dream’s game against the Dallas Wings.
“I’m built for this. Thank you to everyone who has checked in on me & sent love. Everything happens for a reason and I’m so excited for what’s next.”

Martin has already landed on her feet, signing a developmental contract with the Los Angeles Sparks. Hopefully, Winterburn will be able to do the same.
