Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow recently said that the team told former game planning and run prevention coach and legendary catcher Jason Varitek that there was "a place in this organization for him for as long as he wants it."
Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy echoed those words in an interview with NESN's Tom Caron, nearly three weeks after the organization fired manager Alex Cora and dismissed several coaches.
"Sam Kennedy spoke with @TomCaron on Jason Varitek's reassignment. 'Tek is a Red Sox Hall of Famer. One of the most important figures in our history… We're gonna give him all the time he needs [to make a decision]… He's got a very bright future in the game, and hopefully it'll be here with the Red Sox for the long term,'" NESN posted on X.
After initial varying reports regarding Varitek's status, the Red Sox said that the three-time All-Star "had been reassigned to a new role within the organization."
The 54-year-old spent his entire 15-year playing career with Boston, winning two World Series and serving as the Red Sox's captain from 2005 to 2011.
Varitek retired as a player in March 2012 and has been a member of Boston's coaching staff since 2021.
