The New York Mets will have to decide over the next few months what they want to do at the trade deadline. With how many options the Mets have, there's really no telling what could happen.
The Mets could look to move on from certain guys, try to build for the future, or see this thing out and hope that things turn around. By the beginning of August, we should have a really good feel for who the Mets are, even if we don't feel like we need to wait that much longer because of how poorly they've played throughout the year.
Among the potential trade options in New York, right-hander Clay Holmes, the former New York Yankees bullpen arm turned starter, is viewed as one of the top candidates to be dealt. In a recent trade proposal from Sports Illustrated, he'd find his way to the pitching-needy Chicago Cubs.
Cubs Get: Holmes
Mets Get: Jaxon Wiggins, Pedro Ramirez
“The Cubs are primed for a World Series run with a record of 27-14, as of May 12. They are the second-best team in the National League, and if they have any need, it is pitching depth. Currently, Matthew Boyd is injured, and the team also recently lost Cade Horton for the season. A high-upside pitcher in Holmes would be someone that the Cubs can gain at a moderate price, providing win-now value at a sub-3.00 expected ERA,” Thomas Carelli of SI wrote.
When the Cubs are healthy, they're one of the more intriguing teams in baseball. Even with some of the injuries they've dealt with on the mound this year, there's a lot to like out in Wrigley.
Depending on the price they'd have to pay to get Holmes in terms of prospects, it's definitely worth considering. He hasn't been the problem for the Mets and would be a really nice addition for a contending team.
