One of the less talked-about free agency moves to happen in the prior offseason was that of Alex Verdugo to the San Diego Padres, with the two agreeing to a minor league contract. Given Verdugo’s career stats and his consistent performances with the Atlanta Braves in the prior season, slashing .239/.296/.289 with 12 RBIs, it wouldn’t have been a shock to see the 29-year-old get a shot at donning a Padres’ jersey at some point in the campaign.
However, life in the Padres’ system wouldn’t ever really get started for Verdugo, as he never took to the field for any of the franchise’s minor league affiliates.
Padres release Verdugo after injury report
While it isn’t known if this was the issue, it was reported on Tuesday evening that Verdugo was being released by the Padres’ organization, as he has suffered from a shoulder injury that could keep him out for the rest of the season, given that it could require surgery, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee.
The departure of Verdugo might not be the omen that some might have taken it as, given that San Diego has plenty of depth in the outfield on their roster, with the likes of Nick Castellanos and Bryce Johnson coming off the bench.
It’s also safe to say that if the Padres exit Tuesday night’s loss to the Milwaukee Brewers with the top spot in the National League West, tied with the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, they shouldn’t look to change anything.
