Carlos Rodon didn't have the start he was hoping for, but it was very important that he got back on the mound for the New York Yankees. If the Yankees want to win a World Series, they definitely need Rodon and Gerrit Cole on the mound and healthy, throwing the baseball at the level everybody expects them to.
Rodon honestly looked decent for his first start back, even though he admitted that he was a bit upset because of his walk problems. Regardless, there were some very promising signs throughout this outing, and one of them was his fastball velocity being up more than 1.5 mph from what it was a season ago.
“Rodón made his season debut Sunday and held the Milwaukee Brewers hitless for the first 3⅔ innings while reaching a peak velocity of 97.7 mph. But he also walked five and hit a batter before leaving with one out in the fifth inning.
“His fastball averaged 95.7 mph, up from 94.1 mph last year. Only 42 of the 78 pitches Rodón threw were strikes,” ESPN wrote.
Having his average fastball almost reach 96 mph, up from 94, is a really big deal, especially when he's almost hitting 98.
I suspect that Rodon will continue to throw the baseball even harder, which should make him just as dominant as he's been throughout a lot of his career. This was a very good sign and something I'm excited to see in the future.
