The Philadelphia Phillies have started to play a lot better over the past week or so, which is a promising sign. However, it's still fair to mention that if the Phillies have another blunder as they did just a month ago, there's reason to believe they could move on from some very good players.

I'd be shocked to see them move on from somebody like Bryce Harper or Zack Wheeler, but some are starting to believe that Wheeler could be available for the right package.

Padres Get: Wheeler
Phillies Get: Kruz Schoolcraft, Ethan Salas, Bradgley Rodriguez

“The Phillies make this trade because their 2026 season has slipped to 17–21 in third place in the NL East, and the firing of Rob Thomson signals a shift away from the current core.

“Even though Zack Wheeler is still effective with a 3.12 ERA and strong WHIP, he is 35 years old, making him more valuable as a trade chip than a long-term piece for a team not currently contending,” Ryan Shea of SI wrote.

Salas would be the marquee piece of this trade, but the young Padres catching prospect really hasn't been good over the past two years or so in Minor League Baseball.

He was once viewed as the top prospect in the game and somebody who had a legitimate chance of being a superstar one day, but it doesn't feel like that's the case any longer.

I would definitely avoid this trade, even if the Phillies have a horrible record and aren't playing well at the deadline.
