Max Eberl opens up on Bayern Munich’s latest coach search, signing Vincent Kompany

Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl has recently talked about the infamous search for a coach in 2024, after the club announced in February of that year that Thomas Tuchel would not continue to be in charge for the next season. The appointment of a new coach was filled with rumors, while fans and pundits alike were overwhelmed with all the names being thrown around.

In an interview with ZDF (via Florian Plettenberg as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Eberl confirmed contact with some relevant names that had been mentioned by the press and guessed around by fans, while detailing how they ended up choosing Vincent Kompany for the job. “We spoke with Nagelsmann, Rangnick and Glasner. Some wanted to bring Flick back. Kompany was always on the list. I didn’t dare approach Vincent first,” confessed Eberl.

Eberl also mentioned the good feeling they had about Kompany, while also giving an insight on how Manchester City’s coach and former Bayern manager Pep Guardiola was instrumental on the club’s decision and approach on Kompany. “He is a fantastic person and coach (…) We only received positive feedback about him, also from Pep Guardiola. I told Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: ‘Call Pep.’ That was the door opener. Then we signed him.”

The club eventually revealed Kompany as the new Bayern coach on May 29, 2024, and the coach has already given good results, after winning 2 Bundesligas and taking Bayern to the UEFA Champions League semifinals for the first time since the 2023/2024 season. The club and fans seem to be looking forward to have Kompany imprinting his football philosophy on the squad and wait for more successful results.
