The Houston Astros lost Carlos Correa for the remainder of the 2026 campaign after he suffered a season-ending tendon tear injury in his left ankle. It’s a brutal blow for a Houston team already at the bottom of the rankings in the AL West, and one former MLB player believes the club’s playoff chances are done for.
In the latest episode of “Foul Territory,” former catcher AJ Pierzynski believes Correa’s injury might just be the final nail in the coffin for the Astros’ chances to make the playoffs. Between the makeup of the roster, the poor pitching so far this year, and the number of injuries the club is already experiencing, the postseason might just be a dream for Houston.
“With the way [the Astros are] constructed right now, the pitching and the injuries, no, I don’t think they do [make the playoffs],” said Pierzynski. “No one in the AL West is running away with this, but I think the [Texas] Rangers, [Seattle] Mariners, and the [Athletics] are all better than where the Astros are at right now… I don’t think the Astros can do it.”
While Houston is only 4.0 games behind the first-placed Athletics, the Astros own a measly 15-22 record entering Wednesday’s contest against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team has an uphill battle to climb, and without Carlos Correa, the chances of competing in the AL West took a notable hit.
Additionally, the Astros have 13 players on the IL right now, with seven of them in the starting rotation and bullpen. With the pitching struggling this season, along with the multitude of injuries piling up, the odds are certainly against Houston making the postseason.
