Wolfsburg manager Dieter Hecking applauds resilient performance against Bayern Munich

Since winning the club’s only Bundesliga title in 2008/09, Wolfsburg’s managerial position has been a swinging door. Dieter Hecking led the squad for four years from 2012-2016, leading Wolfsburg to berths in the Champions League and Europa League while also claiming the 2014/15 DFB-Pokal trophy. Hecking took the Borussia Mönchengladbach job and Wolfsburg spent the next decade with 11 different managers.

Fast forward to 2026, Hecking returned to the club in March to help them stave off relegation. Wolfsburg produced five points in the last three matches before dropping a 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich.

“Today I saw a team that believes in itself, that can handle the intensity, that had a good basic structure, and that had its moments in the game where we could have turned it in our favor,” said Hecking (via FCBayern.com). “Of course, we also know the danger against Bayern, that you inevitably hit a rough patch. Unfortunately, we conceded the goal during that period. If we had weathered that a bit better and perhaps stepped up a little earlier when doubling against Michael Olise, then the game might have opened up even more towards the end. And then, towards the end, we had that huge chance with the shot that hit the post. Ultimately, though, it doesn’t change the situation whether we drew or lost decisively. Nevertheless, it’s a good feeling. I’m very happy to take that with me because the team has really shown me in recent weeks that it’s capable of such performances.”

In the final matchday, Wolfsburg will face off against St. Pauli. Both teams are tied on points in the 16th spot but Wolfsburg holds the advantage on goal differential. A win or draw will send Wolfsburg to the relegation playoff.
