The Preakness Stakes will have a different look in 2026, but one aspect will remain the same: The Kentucky Derby champion will not run the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Golden Tempo will not compete in Maryland on the heels of his remarkable come-from-behind victory at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May, opting instead to rest up for the Belmont Stakes.

MORE: Why Golden Tempo won't race the Preakness

It's the sixth time in eight years the Derby winner will sit out the Preakness, ensuring Justify in 2018 will remain the most recent Triple Crown winner for at least one more year.

So who are the horses to watch this year as the Preakness shifts to Laurel Park with its 150-year home at Pimlico undergoing renovations? Don't look for any of the Derby also-rans; none of the 18 starters at Churchill Downs will run next weekend.

The early and heavy betting favorite is Bob Baffert's Cruel Velocity (4-1), with Iron Honor (19-1) and Taj Mahal (20-1) a distant second and third.
