Fermin Lopez says Barcelona’s players aren’t obsessed with winning the Champions League but do have a “burning desire” to bring the European Cup back to the Camp Nou.
Barcelona have made it to the semi-finals and the quarter-finals under Hansi Flick and will go again next season, hoping to end their wait to be crowned European champions once more.
Lopez says that he feels the team are close to Champions League success and that they are heading in the right direction.
“Obviously, yes. We’re not obsessed with the Champions League because it’s a tough competition, and we’re the ones who want to win it the most. We have that burning desire to win it, and we’re very close; we just need one more step, and I think we’re on the right track. Hopefully, we can win it next year,” he told Què Thi Jugues.
“The Champions League is all about the small details. I think we were having a really good Champions League run. In the first leg, they scored two goals against us and had a player sent off, which made things very difficult, but we still had chances to equalize.
“In the second leg, we were playing a great game, and after my injury, the game cooled down, and it was better for them, and we couldn’t come back.
“But I think we’re very close to reaching a Champions League final. And I think we have to keep going like this, with the same mentality, because anything can happen in the Champions League.”
Barcelona are hoping to strengthen their squad in the summer in a bid to try and win the Champions League next season.
Hansi Flick has said it’s his “dream” to win the competition for Barca and is due to pen a contract extension next week that will keep him at the club until 2028.
