Well, this is the big one. What happens in today’s Premier League football action could have a massive effect on Tottenham Hotspur’s prospects for staying in the Premier League… IF they also do their jobs and get a result at home against Leeds on Monday.
It’s also one of those weird, unsettling times where Spurs fans find themselves rooting for Arsenal… kinda? Sorta? The Gunners play away at West Ham, and they’ll be super motivated to win, since doing so increases their odds of (barf) winning the Premier League. However, West Ham are Spurs’ biggest rivals for relegation right now, so an Arsenal win plus a Spurs win on Monday means Spurs will be four points ahead of the Hammers with two games to play and a healthy edge in goal differential. That said, a West Ham win doesn’t relegate Tottenham, it just means they have to beat Leeds to keep pace. And a West Ham win would also push Arsenal back behind Manchester City in the title race if City win their match in hand.
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest face Newcastle. If Forest lose, they’re dragged closer to the relegation morass, and even Crystal Palace and Leeds wont’ be immune if they lose their matches against Everton and Spurs, respectively.
So there’s a LOT going on and a lot of moving parts. At best Spurs can exit the weekend in pretty darned decent shape. At worst they slip back behind West Ham with two matches to go.
This is your Sunday open thread. Don’t panic!
