Serie A nightmare scenario: Napoli, Milan, Juventus, Roma, Como on 71 points

There is a possible nightmare scenario where Napoli, Juventus, Milan, Roma and Como could all finish on 71 Serie A points, creating chaos for Champions League and Europa League qualification.

We are going into the final two rounds of the Serie A campaign and the situation is still up in the air, with five teams crammed in a five-point radius for the remaining three Champions League spots.

Whoever finishes in fifth and sixth will qualify for the Europa League, with seventh in all likelihood going to Atalanta and the Conference League.

There is a nightmare scenario where it’s possible all five of these teams could finish the season level on 71 points.

It would require Napoli to get just one point from two rounds against Pisa and Udinese, Juventus three points against Fiorentina and Torino, Milan four points with Genoa and Cagliari, Roma four points between Lazio and Verona, plus Como to beat both Parma and Cremonese.

When sides are level on points in Serie A, then goal difference does not matter in dividing teams.

It is all about their head-to-head record throughout the course of a campaign.

If these sides were to all finish together on 71 points, a ‘classifica avulsa’ would be drawn up, namely a mini-league table of their results against each other.

In this situation, Milan, Napoli and Como would enter the Champions League, leaving Juventus and Roma to the Europa League.

Play-offs are only possible for two scenarios, in case two teams are joint top for the Scudetto, and with two sides level for relegation.
