Report: Liverpool in shock move for Serie A star as Inter plot raid on Reds’ midfielder

Dumfries Emerges in Liverpool Transfer Picture

Liverpool’s summer rebuild may yet take an intriguing twist involving both Liverpool FC and Inter Milan, with Curtis Jones and Denzel Dumfries now linked through two separate strands of transfer business.

According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Inter Milan are considering reviving their interest in Jones, while Liverpool have been tracking Dumfries as Arne Slot looks to strengthen his options at right-back ahead of next season.

The Italian champions had explored a move for Jones during the January window, initially weighing up a loan arrangement with an option to buy. Their interest has not disappeared. Joyce reports that the Serie A side remain keen on the England midfielder, although Liverpool’s valuation of around £35 million could complicate negotiations despite Jones entering the final year of his contract.

Yet the more compelling angle from a Liverpool perspective concerns Dumfries.

Joyce noted that Liverpool “have looked at Inter’s Denzel Dumfries, who has a £22 million release clause in his contract”, a detail that immediately sharpens focus on the Netherlands international as a realistic target for the Reds.

Jones Situation Opens Fresh Debate

Jones finds himself at a crossroads despite featuring more regularly under Slot than at any previous stage of his Liverpool career. Injuries elsewhere in the squad have even forced the academy graduate into an unfamiliar right-back role in recent months following Conor Bradley’s season-ending setback.

That positional reshuffle has only increased scrutiny around Liverpool’s recruitment plans.

At 25, Jones still possesses immense technical quality and remains one of the club’s most naturally gifted homegrown players. However, questions persist over where he best fits in Slot’s evolving system. Inter Milan clearly see value there, especially after securing another domestic title and preparing for a demanding campaign across multiple fronts.

Joyce’s reporting suggests Tottenham also admired Jones earlier this year before moving for Conor Gallagher instead. Liverpool, meanwhile, continue to value Jones highly internally, believing he compares favourably with Gallagher in both age profile and ceiling.

There is also an emotional layer to the story. Jones has been with Liverpool since the age of nine. His connection to the club runs deep. Yet modern football rarely leaves room for sentiment when contracts enter dangerous territory.

Recent social media activity has added further intrigue. Jones reacted publicly to Mohamed Salah’s post calling for a return to Jürgen Klopp’s “heavy metal football”, a moment interpreted by many as frustration with Liverpool’s tactical direction under Slot.

Whether that means Jones is genuinely open to leaving remains unclear. What is obvious is that Inter Milan sense opportunity.

Inter Milan Calculations Around Dumfries

For Liverpool supporters, Dumfries is arguably the more immediate talking point.

The Dutch international has long been admired for his athleticism, relentless running power and attacking output from wide areas. Slot knows his qualities well from Dutch football, and Liverpool’s need for reinforcement on the right side of defence has become increasingly urgent.

Bradley’s injury exposed how heavily Liverpool relied on stability in that position. Dumfries offers something different from Trent Alexander-Arnold stylistically, but perhaps exactly what Slot may want during transitional phases of matches.

At 30, he would not represent a long-term project signing. Instead, he would bring experience, physical presence and proven pedigree at both Champions League and international level.

The £22 million release clause mentioned by Joyce could make the deal particularly attractive in a market where elite full-backs routinely command far higher fees.

Inter Milan may also calculate that Jones could help offset any potential departure. While there is no suggestion of a direct swap arrangement, the links between the two clubs are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Liverpool’s recruitment team have often prioritised value and tactical suitability over glamour. Dumfries fits that pattern.

Slot Faces Crucial Summer Decisions

This summer already feels pivotal for Slot.

Liverpool are navigating contract uncertainty across multiple areas of the squad while simultaneously attempting to evolve tactically after the Klopp era. Decisions surrounding Jones, Dumfries and several senior players could shape the club’s next phase.

Inter Milan’s interest in Jones may test Liverpool’s resolve, particularly if contract talks fail to progress. At the same time, Dumfries appears to be moving into genuine contention as Liverpool assess the market for defensive reinforcements.

The interconnected nature of the two situations gives this story unusual texture. One player could be heading towards the San Siro while another potentially travels in the opposite direction.

For now, much depends on Liverpool’s internal priorities and whether Slot views Jones as central to the future or expendable in pursuit of a more balanced squad.

Either way, Paul Joyce’s reporting has brought Dumfries firmly into the conversation, and Liverpool supporters will now watch developments with growing interest as Inter Milan attempt to position themselves at the centre of the Reds’ summer business.
