Aaron Rai pulled it off.
Rai ran away with the PGA Championship late on Sunday afternoon at Aronimink Golf Club to claim his first career major championship win. The Englishman reached 9-under on the week, thanks in part to a 68-foot birdie putt he sank at the 17th.
Rai entered the week at No. 44 in the Official World Golf Rankings and with just a single PGA Tour win under his belt. His 65 on Sunday marked the lowest round of his major championship career, too.
Here’s a look at the top of the leaderboard of the PGA Championship. He had never finished better than T19 in a major championship, either — though he’s pulled that off three times, most recently at last year’s PGA Championship. The win earned him nearly a $3.7 million check, which was part of a record purse this week at the event.
