Miami is looking to make another run at a national championship in 2026. While expectations are high, Mario Cristobal is trying to keep his team humble and hungry for the upcoming campaign.
Cristobal does not need to worry about the focus of his running back. Mark Fletcher is focused on revenge after the loss to Indiana in the CFP National Championship, according to Pete Nakos of On3.
“That makes me sick to my stomach,” Fletcher said of the Indiana loss. “We were at home and lost. Anybody who’s a real competitor — you lose in front of your home team crowd, that’s a sick feeling. Even after that game, I talked to the guys in the locker room and said, ‘Anybody who’s coming back — we’re coming back with a vengeance.’ But we’re not just going to get there by being mad. You can be mad, but you’ve just got to go back to work. That’s all we’ve got to do.”
Fletcher was great in 2025, rushing for 1,192 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was also dominant in the playoffs. In four games, the Miami running back ran for 507 yards with two touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass. In the National Championship against Indiana, he ran for 112 yards and two scores. That likely would have been enough for Fletcher to earn a solid spot in the NFL Draft, but he chose to come back.
“There’s definitely some unfinished business,” he said. “But it’s just the fact that I get to play at Miami again. It’s not like I redshirted or got held back. I’m a true senior, and the fact that I get to do this one more time is a blessing. I know the risk. Everybody says playing running back takes a toll. But I feel like God is just gonna put me right where I need to be at all times. I’m not worried about any of that. I’m just ready to go have fun one more time.”
Miami is one of the favorites to return to the playoffs in 2026. They open their 2026 campaign on September 4 on the road against Stanford.
