Alphonso Davies has been injured once again this season, and it is so sad to see from both a sporting and personal perspective. After bursting onto the scene in Bayern Munich’s dominant 2019-20 season under Hansi Flick, the Canadian star has never hit the same levels he reached in that season, largely due to injury.
However, with the FIFA World Cup being hosted in Canada in 2026, there is opportunity for a once-in-a-lifetime moment for the Canadian player and the Canadian fans. Davies who moved to Canada as a refugee in his youth, loves his country, and his country loves him.
Sadly, this injury has put a serious doubt in his ability to play this summer. Max Eberl was recently asked to comment on his contact with Canada Soccer regarding their player. “Our hope is that we can all work together to do what’s best for Phonzy. It’s tragic enough that he’s picked up an injury ahead of the World Cup on home soil. We’ll all work together to ensure he might have a chance – but for that to happen, he needs to get fit. He has to accept that, and he does,” Eberl said, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
BFW Commentary
Well it is clear that whether or Davies does, in fact, return to the lineup, he likely will be playing through some sort of injury that is not 100%. That might be hard to hear for Bayern Munich fans, but for Canadians it is a desperate attempt to get something out of a World Cup, that will never happen again in their lifetimes, if ever again. As a Canadian and Bayern fan, I see both sides but it is hard to imagine a Canadian team without Davies out there.
