Following Saturday’s FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley it was reported the Blues had reached an agreement in principle with Alonso.

Alonso is said to have agreed a four year contract at Stamford Bridge, and has been given the title of manager, unlike Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior who were head coaches.

Chelsea expected to announce Xabi Alonso on Sunday morning

It was reported Alonso was Chelsea’s preferred target, with Andoni Iraola believed to be Chelsea’s second choice.

Getting Alonso is a real coup for Chelsea, and it’s an appointment that will no doubt go down well with the squad.

Alonso had great success at Bayer Leverkusen, and won 24 of his 36 matches at Real Madrid, and Mail Sport have reported Alonso will begin work on July 1st, with an official announcement expected on Sunday morning.

It’s believed there could be a chance that Alonso will be at Chelsea’s final home game of the season against Tottenham on Tuesday night.

The Spaniard is certainly the best manager Chelsea could have got, and it’s now up to the club to properly back him in the summer to give him the best chance of success next season.
