Some of the players on our list of next-gen machines had expanded roles and more trust from their coaches this past season, and their double-double abilities soared.
Positioning is also key. Guards with high-volume production off the pick-and-roll create more assisting opportunities, while paint-dominating bigs boost their rebounds as much as their scoring.

Jalen Johnson, Hawks: 49 double-doubles
No sooner had Trae Young left Atlanta than Johnson’s role as the Hawks’ leader took flight. He even hit 13 triple-doubles in 2025-26 because his efficiency got such a big boost. He ranked fifth in the NBA in assists (7.9 APG) and seventh overall in rebounds (10.3 RPG), all while scoring 22.5 points on 48.9% shooting per night. Johnson’s starting role is secure, which means more opportunities for double-double production in the 2026-27 season.
Victor Wembanyama, Spurs: 42 double-doubles
Wemby’s ascension to elite-level ball continues, as he posted almost twice as many double-doubles in 2025-26 as he did the previous season. Sure, being 7-foot-4 helps get that rebound quote up, but it doesn’t account for his 51.2% field goal rate. It’s Wembanyama’s ability to dominate both ends of the floor that makes him the double-double threat fantasy managers want on their rosters.
Jalen Duren and Cade Cunningham, Pistons: 41 and 38 double-doubles
Detroit got a big production boost in 2025-26 when Duren had a breakout season to support Cunningham’s leadership. Cunningham posted the second-most assists per game during the regular season (9.9 APG) due to his ability to draw multiple defenders. Meanwhile, Duren’s 6-foot-10 frame and savvy positioning set him up perfectly to post 10-plus rebounds a night.
Donovan Clingan, Trail Blazers: 37 double-doubles
The 22-year-old center is easily the most underrated player on our list. He broke out in his second NBA season as a true rim-protector, posting an impressive 11.6 rebounds per game (third-most in the league) while averaging 12.1 points per night on 52.0% shooting from the field. Clingan more than earned his starting status in Portland, promising more double-double production next year.
Alperen Sengun, Rockets: 34 double-doubles
Sengun had four triple-doubles during the regular season since he’s a pretty good assist-creator for a center (6.2 APG). But, his bread and butter is his aggressive rebounding style mixed with the consistency to post 20-plus points per game. He has developed into Houston’s two-way anchor, and fantasy managers enjoy his production as well.

While all double-double machines are important fantasy assets, the celebrity level of these players will impact when they get scooped up in redraft leagues.
Wembanyama is a first-round pick in every league format, and Cunningham is a first-rounder in points leagues because of his high-volume shooting. Johnson is a strong second-round pick following his breakout 2025-26 campaign. Veteran managers know they will go off the board early, and rightfully so.
Clingan was a big sleeper this past season, and it’s likely he’s still a third-round candidate ahead of fantasy drafts. Managers could draft him earlier at a discounted ADP, but he should be added as a supporting piece, rather than being a roster anchor.
Duren is tricky since his disappointing playoff showing will dent his ADP. However, he has posted two double-doubles in postseason play and has shot 50% from the field, so maybe managers shouldn’t take him off of their 2026-27 fantasy draft boards just yet.
