Everyone has their opinions on the Ballon d’Or. What was once the footballing world’s most reveled individual accolade has been tarnished for many that now deem it to be nothing more than a thinly veiled popularity contest, but there’s still hope that it can change for the good. We’re no longer in the era dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but every time the award announcement rolls around, it’s most often met with controversy.
This time around, there’s justifiable fervor that Harry Kane could get the nod for his exploits with Bayern Munich and the England national team. So far this season, the England skipper has tallied 55 goals and 7 assists from a total of 49 appearances across all competitions for Bayern and he also tallied 6 goals for England after the 2025/26 campaign had started. He might not have gotten Robert Lewandowski’s single season scoring record in the Bundesliga, but a solid showing at this summer’s World Cup could really tilt the Ballon d’Or in Kane’s favor.
Chelsea striker João Pedro recently expressed his admiration of Kane in an interview with TNT Sports Brazil (via @iMiaSanMia). He had experience playing against Kane when he was still in the Premier League with Tottenham both with Chelsea and at Watford. He feels Bayern’s #9 is more than capable of winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
“He was already having extraordinary numbers in the Premier League, but now seeing him at Bayern, we can really get a picture of the quality that Harry Kane possesses. I have a lot of admiration for him. I played against him when I was at Watford and he was at Tottenham, and he totally dominated the game. I’m always rooting for him because he’s a fantastic player. Can he win the Ballon d’Or? In my opinion, yes. Because he’s an extraordinary player,” Pedro said in the interview ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup final vs. Manchester City at Wembley.
Of course, Pedro’s opinion alone wouldn’t warrant Kane getting a Ballon d’Or, but his sentiment is more than likely shared by other talents across the Premier League and Europe’s other major leagues as well.
