On Sunday, the San Antonio Spurs dropped Game 4 of their second round series against the Minnesota Timberwolves in a contest that was overshadowed by the ejection of Victor Wembanyama after his vicious elbow to Naz Reid. Wembanyama was extremely lucky to avoid a suspension for Game 5, a decision that was announced by the league on Monday following the incident.
Still, Wembanyama has had to face the wrath of the NBA media cycle after the clearly intentional dirty play, including from ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst.
“This was a very immature act by a player who took himself out of the game… to act like he didn’t know what the results were on the bench, Wemby is one of the smartest young players. He knew exactly what he had done,” said Windhorst, per Get Up on X, formerly Twitter.
Indeed, after the ejection was announced, Wembanyama appeared to be confused on the bench, asking teammate Harrison Barnes if he was indeed being thrown out, before high-fiving his teammates and walking back to the locker room.
Many felt that Ron Artest’s seven-game suspension for elbowing James Harden many years ago served as a proper precedent for Wembanyama in regards to a suspension, but ultimately, the NBA decided not to keep out one of its biggest cash cows for a pivotal Game 5 of this series in San Antonio.
The Spurs actually did a strong job of holding down the fort initially in Wembanyama’s absence on Sunday, but they ultimately fell apart in the fourth quarter, and now find themselves in a best-of-three situation, still retaining home-court advantage in the series.
Game 5 is set for Tuesday evening at 8:00 pm ET in San Antonio.
