Chris Sale went viral for his mental lapse regarding the number of outs during one of the innings in the Atlanta Braves’ matchup against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night.
Sale is going through the 17th season of his MLB career, his third with the Braves. He continues to stand out as of the most solid veteran pitchers in the game, garnering All-Star selections in his late-30s.
However, that doesn’t mean he is safe from having mental lapses. Luckily for him, this error wasn’t detrimental to the team as he struck out a batter in the top of the fourth inning. He thought the frame was still ongoing but later realized that he got the third out to finish out that part of the inning.
How Chris Sale, Braves played against Cubs
Chris Sale enjoyed a solid showing on the mound, but his efforts weren’t enough as the Braves faltered in a 2-0 shutout loss to the Cubs.
Going into the game, Atlanta already won the series after taking Game 1 by a 5-2 score and Game 2 by a 4-1 score. They hoped to complete the three-game sweep, but Chicago had other ideas by shutting them out for the entire game.
Sale was a bright spot in the loss as he served on the mound for six innings, striking out eight batters while conceding five hits. However, that didn’t stop him from receiving the loss, seeing his record fall to a 6-3 showing.
Atlanta fell to a 30-14 record on the season but maintain the top spot in the NL East Division standings. They are above the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals at the moment.
The Braves will look to bounce back in their next series, remaining at home for their next opponent. They host the Boston Red Sox as Game 1 takes place on May 15 at 7:15 p.m. ET.
