Manuel Neuer is likely to play at his fifth World Cup in a few weeks.
According to Sky’s Florian Plettenberg, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has decided on Manuel Neuer as his No. 1 goalkeeper. Previous reports had already claimed Neuer was on Nagelsmann’s 55-man preliminary squad.
The Bayern Munich captain himself remained tight-lipped when he got asked about the topic. After Bayern’s final Bundesliga game of the season against FC Köln, (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) Neuer simply replied: “Ask the coach. For me this is not a topic right now. The focus is on the DFB-Pokal final.”
When asked whether a comeback was ruled out or not, he repeated that it was “not a topic right now.”
Things will become clear next Thursday, when Nagelsmann announces his final squad. Neuer had initially retired from the national team following EURO 2024.
However, the question remains as to whether Neuer will be fit for the start of the tournament, as he was substituted off against Köln with an apparent calf issue. If the injury is not severe, Neuer will likely be going to North America.
