Hailed as the Manuel Neuer successor, at least once Alexander Nübel has seemingly been off the cards for the Bavarian giants, Jonas Urbig has been everything as promised and more for a goalkeeper of his age. Urbig is making massive rounds this season, earning praise from critics, fans, and club staff.
Now this success can be seen clearer than ever, as Urbig now holds the highest clean sheet rate of any goalkeepers with 10+ appearances in the Bundesliga this season. Urbig has kept a clean sheet in almost half of his league performances this year, and would likely have the most clean sheets, if he were to play the whole season.
This success will likely increase the already mounting pressure on Neuer to perform when a legitimate, match-ready candidate is available. At his age, Nagelsmann is already likely to get a call up to this summer’s World Cup, and frankly, it is not unthinkable that he could earn a starting role over a struggling Oliver Baumann.
Is Urbig ready for his big moment? Many believe so, and if Nagelsmann is to stay true to his performance principle, he might be the clear choice alongside SC Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu.
