Advocaat returns to lead Curaçao ahead of World Cup

Dick Advocaat is set to take charge of Curaçao again, less than three months after stepping down for personal reasons. He returns following  Fred Rutten’s departure.

Advocaat had led Curaçao through a historic campaign that saw them reach their first World Cup, but he left in February due to his daughter’s health issues. It’s not clear whether his family situation has improved during his time away, but he’s now accepted the offer to come back.

Rutten’s brief spell in charge already hinted at unrest within the squad over the decision to leave Advocaat out of the World Cup setup. Reports suggest the players were unhappy and pushed for change, with Rutten now stepping aside to allow Advocaat’s return.

Curaçao are in Group E at the World Cup and open their campaign on 14 February against Germany. They’ll also face Ivory Coast and Ecuador in the group stage.
