Bayern Munich in conundrum over World Cup status for Alphonso Davies

Bayern Munich and Alphonso Davies are going to have some very tough decisions to make in the coming weeks per Bild (via @iMiaSanMia):

Bayern are facing a dilemma regarding Alphonso Davies. His latest injury is a muscle tear and actually requires a six-week rehab. However, clubs are obliged to release their players for the World Cup in 3 weeks. In Canada, there’s talk of only a 4-5 week break, meaning Davies could return just in time for the start of the tournament, which is a huge risk.

Even if he were to travel only as a supporter, Davies’ rehab would not proceed ideally, as it would constantly be interrupted by intercontinental flights and domestic travel. On the other hand, if Bayern were to insist on completing the rehab entirely in Munich, it would be tough for Davies as he would miss his home World Cup, a once in a lifetime experience.

This will be a tough situation for Bayern Munich and Davies alike. Complicating things is that Davies is just a year past tearing his ACL, and a few months past another hamstring injury. Eschewing proper rehab and rest for a condensed-format tournament could be a recipe for disaster — even if he does just travel with the Canadian national team.

Will Bayern Munich try to influence Davies to skip the tourney? Will Davies get out in front of the decision and opt to sit out or even stay in Germany to rehab?

Both of those scenarios seem unlikely and this uncertainty will probably remain for at least another few weeks with Canada Soccer left to just sit and wait for a decision to be made.

Final 26-man squads for the 2026 World Cup must be submitted to FIFA by May 30th, with official, finalized lists expected to be announced by FIFA on June 2nd. Provisional rosters of 35-55 players were due yesterday (May 11th).
