The San Antonio Spurs refused to fold in Game 4 on Sunday despite losing Victor Wembanyama to an ejection in the first half. They, however, ran out of gas in the fourth quarter and succumbed to the Minnesota Timberwolves, 114-109, at Target Center.

Their second-round series is now tied, 2-2.

Wembanyama was tossed in the second period after he elbowed Naz Reid in the neck. After the review, he was assessed a flagrant 2 foul, which had him automatically tossed. He finished with four points, four rebounds, and two turnovers in 12 minutes.

Some are positing that Wembanyama might be suspended for Game 5. Coach Mitch Johnson, however, slammed the possibility.

“There was zero intent. I think it would be ridiculous,” said Johnson, as quoted by the San Antonio Express-News’ Tom Orsborn.

It was the first time that the 22-year-old Wembanyama was ejected.

He is usually even-keeled, even learning about meditation in a monastery in China in the offseason. That is why his elbowing of Reid came as a surprise to many, including Dylan Harper, whose reaction quickly went viral.

He was coming off a monster performance in their win in Game 3, tallying 39 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks, joining Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Hakeem Olajuwon as the only players who recorded at least 35 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks in the playoffs.

Edwards admitted that the exit of Wembanyama was a major difference, although he also lauded the Spurs for playing more freely.

The Spurs will look to bounce back in Game 5 at Frost Bank Center on Tuesday.
