The Toronto Blue Jays are still looking to build momentum early in the 2026 MLB season, as they enter Sunday with an 18-21 record, and find themselves third in the American League East.
The Blue Jays have spent much of their season battling inconsistency and injuries, and one player who has struggled to stay healthy is outfielder Addison Barger, who has dealt with multiple injury-related setbacks while trying to remain a consistent presence in Toronto’s lineup.
The versatile 26-year-old, able to play both in the outfield and at third base, brings left-handed power and an elite throwing arm to Toronto. However, due to multiple injuries, Barger has only appeared in nine games this year and has had a difficult start to the season, batting only .045 with no home runs so far.

Barger has been an important piece for the Blue Jays since his 2025 breakout campaign, where he hit 21 home runs and knocked the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history in a Game 1 victory over the eventual champion Los Angeles Dodgers.
On Sunday, the Blue Jays announced their lineup ahead of a matchup against the Los Angeles Angels. Notably, Barger, who was expected to bat leadoff, was removed from the lineup.
Toronto made a late change before first pitch as concerns quickly emerged surrounding the outfielder’s availability. The team posted on X that Barger had been scratched from the lineup because of “right elbow soreness.”
Elbow soreness can be particularly concerning for outfielders, especially on their throwing arm. The late scratch may just be a precautionary move, and manager John Schneider is expected to speak with the media postgame and provide an update on Barger’s status going forward.
Toronto has already dealt with several injury concerns across the roster this season, making lineup consistency difficult to maintain during the opening months of the year.
The Blue Jays will now hope Barger’s latest issue is minor as he continues trying to settle into a regular role in the lineup. Toronto is looking to complete a three-game series sweep of the Angels on Sunday.
