The MVP debate is already generating strong reactions, and the new WNBA season is just barely starting. In many circles, Caitlin Clark, A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, and Breanna Stewart have emerged as the early frontrunners, with Clark and Wilson appearing to run neck and neck at the very top of the betting markets. And of course, it’s a conversation that has wasted no time in dividing opinion.
Speaking on the Hoopsology podcast, veteran broadcaster Meghan McPeak weighed in on the MVP odds picture, and she didn’t hold back. While she was careful to acknowledge Clark’s talent and rightful place in the conversation, she took clear issue with how the betting lines are currently stacked.
“Yeah, I would say it’s a level of disrespect. And I say it respectfully to Caitlin Clark, great player, phenomenal player, agreed. Obviously, last season was plagued with injuries. Respectfully, I think all three of those, A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, and Breanna Stewart, deserve better odds,” McPeak said.
Her argument, however, wasn’t simply about basketball merit. McPeak pointed out that MVP odds do not reflect who analysts believe is the most deserving candidate. Instead, fan activity across platforms plays a significant role in shaping those numbers. And Caitlin Clark, perhaps the most commercially powerful figure in the sport right now, has a large fanbase that is actively behind her. When that volume of money moves in one direction, platforms adjust their projections accordingly. This means that Clark’s favorable positioning may say as much about her popularity as it does about her championship credentials.
In short, McPeak was arguing that Clark’s MVP odds have been inflated by demand rather than purely by basketball résumé. “If fans start getting tickets on A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, and Breanna Stewart instead, the odds are better in their favor than it would be on Caitlin Clark,” McPeak said.

That said, McPeak isn’t dismissing Caitlin Clark from the conversation entirely. She acknowledges that she belongs in it. But with the cloud of last season’s injuries still hanging over the question of what Clark looks like across a full, healthy campaign, McPeak isn’t ready to install her as a frontrunner. For her, the proven commodities, Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson, and Napheesa Collier, remain the true leaders in the clubhouse. “The leaders in the clubhouse should be Stewie, A’ja, and Fee,” she said plainly.
And McPeak would go even further than that. She believes Kelsey Mitchell also deserves a spot in this conversation, pointing to what Mitchell delivered for the Fever last season while Clark was sidelined. “I would even, from last season, like what Kelsey Mitchell did for The Fever without Caitlin Clark, how are you not in the conversation? So let’s throw her in the conversation,” McPeak said.
But then McPeak still believes that the MVP conversation is still too early. But even then, she considers established stars like Wilson and Stewartdeserving of more respect in the discussion because of their proven résumés and consistent dominance.

Caitlin Clark Kickstarts 2026 WNBA Season With Milestone-Setting Performance
Perhaps Caitlin Clark is already making her case for MVP, and the season is barely a day old. In the Fever’s opening game on Saturday against the Dallas Wings, Clark delivered a 20-point performance that etched her name permanently into the WNBA record books. She became the fastest player in league history to reach 1,000 career points.
Specifically, Caitlin Clark reached the 1,000-point mark in her 54th WNBA game. And with that, she became just the 8th player in WNBA history to hit the mark within 54 career games. Interestingly, Fever legend Tamika Catchings also hit the milestone in exactly 54 games during her storied career with the Indiana Fever in the early 2000s.
The record, however, arrived wrapped in disappointment for Caitlin Clark. Despite her 20 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds, the Fever still fell in a narrow 107–104 loss to the Dallas Wings. A milestone evening on an individual level, but not the opening day statement Indiana was hoping to make as a team.
The Fever will now turn their attention to the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday, eager to get their first win of the season on the board. For a team that has publicly declared championship ambitions and built itself as a contender to go all the way, dropping the opener is far from ideal. The records can wait; what Clark and this Fever team need now is a result, and Wednesday presents the first opportunity to deliver one.
