The San Antonio Spurs are just one win away from the Western Conference Finals, and they have their “alien” to thank for it. After a frustrating Game 4 where Victor Wembanyama looked surprisingly human, the young superstar reminded the world why he is the league’s most terrifying matchup. In a high-stakes Game 5 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Wembanyama took over to secure a 112-107 victory and a 3-2 series lead.
Wembanyama didn’t just bounce back; he played with a visible edge. The Frenchman dominated the interior, finishing with a massive line of 27 points, 17 rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. His presence shifted the entire energy of the game, and former Spurs forward Rudy Gay noticed the change in demeanor immediately.
Speaking with NBA TV, Gay highlighted how Wembanyama’s mental toughness fueled the bounce-back performance.
“He really proved a point today,” Gay said. “He made a point to come out here and show that, just to show like last game he was missing. He came out there today ultra aggressive, he played through a lot of contact, got to the line, made some shots.”
Gay didn’t stop there, emphasizing that the Spurs’ championship aspirations rest entirely on the shoulders of the 22-year-old. “He’s the leader of this team, he’s the head of this snake,” Gay added. “They have a lot of great players, but they go as Wemby goes.”
The aggression was the difference-maker. Unlike the previous contest, where Minnesota’s physical defense disrupted his flow, Wembanyama forced the issue on Tuesday. He attacked the rim relentlessly, drawing fouls and converting 7-of-9 from the free-throw line.
As the series shifts back to Minnesota for Game 6, the pressure sits squarely on the Timberwolves to find an answer for the “head of the snake.” If Wembanyama maintains this level of aggression, San Antonio might be booking a trip to the next round very soon.
