Katherine Legge Making History as First Woman to Attempt Indy-Charlotte Double

For the third year in a row, a driver will attempt the 1100 mile Indy 500, Coca-Cola 600 Double. Katherine Legge is the sixth driver to put their name in the hat for the attempt. If she makes both races, she will be the first woman and the first international driver to attempt the most incredible feat in motorsports.

The last two years with Kyle Larson showed how difficult the Double is in modern times. The Indianapolis 500 is not as early as it used to be, NASCAR has to get racing that Sunday night to avoid going into the early morning hours of Monday. There are a ton of logistics involved that have sank other attempts, including both of Larson's.

Katherine Legge will race for A.J. Foyt Racing in the Indy 500. She will then fly to Charlotte and jump into the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports car. Elf cosmetics is sponsoring the effort, and has shown a true dedication to Legge in the last two years.

The announcement was made late on Tuesday night and into the early morning of Wednesday. Mitchell Northam of USA Today got the exclusive with Legge about the massive undertaking.

Katherine Legge is an experienced racer. She has raced in the Indianapolis 500 multiple times. All four times she has attempted to make the field, she has qualified. She has also gone faster than any other woman at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Perhaps the most amazing part of Legge's career is the longevity. She made her Indy 500 debut in 2012 and then raced again in 2013. She wouldn't compete again in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing until 2023 and then again in 2024. Now, she will attempt the Double.

Last season in her NASCAR starts, Legge struggled, but she also had success. Legge earned top-20 finishes at the Chicago Street Race and the Brickyard 400. To finish P17 at Indy in the Live Fast car shows just how talented she is behind the wheel.

Charlotte Motor Speedway is a large and fast oval. It isn't as big as Indianapolis, but there could be some familiarity for Legge when she gets to the Coca-Cola 600.
