It was a rough week for Bryson DeChambeau at Aronimink.
DeChambeau went 7-over during the first two days of the PGA Championship, which had him well outside the mark needed to make the weekend. Only the top 70 and ties made the cut at the major championship, and DeChambeau is tied for 112th.
DeChambeau looked like he was struggling for most of the day Friday and nearly imploded completely. But he turned it on way too late and actually finished with three straight birdies when it didn’t matter. That got him to a round of 1-over on Friday.
Others, like Billy Horschel, Jacob Bridgeman, Tyrrell Hatton, Gary Woodland and PGA pro Michael Block all went home early, too. Cam Smith, however, found a way to actually make the weekend at a major for the first time in almost two years. The LIV Golf member had missed the cut at his last six major championship starts.
Michael Kim had perhaps the most dramatic way of making it to the weekend, thanks to an eagle chip-in at the last hole of his day. He could have made it in two for birdie and still made it on the number, but this was more fun.
Alex Smalley and Maverick McNealy share the lead at the midway point at 4-under, though there is a massive group of golfers at 3-under — including Hideki Matsuyama and Aldrich Potgieter, who briefly held the lead Friday.
Scottie Scheffler, who held a share of the lead entering the second round, is at 2-under on the week. Rory McIlroy made sure he is into the weekend on Friday, too. After a “s**t” round on Thursday, he posted a 3-under 67 on Friday to make it safely inside the cut at 1-over.
