Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs were looking for a composed response after his first career ejection in Game 4. They got exactly that along with a dominant all-around showing that left the Minnesota Timberwolves overwhelmed.
As the Spurs beat the Wolves 126-97 on Tuesday night to take a 3-2 lead in their second-round series, analyst Colin Cowherd said that Wembanyama and the Spurs could be laying the foundation for a future NBA dynasty.
“Off his ejection, 27.17 rebounds, highest plus minus for the Spurs, three blocks, more assists than anybody the Timberwolves had,” Cowherd said. “It's inevitable. Last night felt like to me the beginning of the end to every NBA franchise not named Oklahoma City for the next decade.
“Minnesota is long, athletic, and deep. Incredibly well coached. They're built specifically to stop a Nikola Jokic or a Wemby… I can't watch the Spurs, who outscored Minnesota, built to beat them in every quarter. Every quarter. The maturity of Wemby Frustrated. What would he be like? Undeniable and invincible.”
Wembanyama’s ejection in Game 4 came after a rebound battle where he got tangled with Naz Reid and Jaden McDaniels, leading to an elbow that struck Reid and resulted in his dismissal. He avoided suspension, and his return in Game 5 proved fruitful as it ultimately powered the Spurs’ commanding win.
As for the dynasty talk, it comes from how well the Spurs have constructed their roster around Wembanyama. The addition of De'Aaron Fox has elevated their transition offense and made Wembanyama even more dangerous in open court situations. Meanwhile, Stephon Castle has provided perimeter defense and secondary playmaking.
