Philadelphia manager names what’s ‘unfair’ on Man City wonder-kid Cavan Cullivan after first MLS goal

Philadelphia manager names what’s ‘unfair’ on Man City wonder-kid Cavan Cullivan after first MLS goal

Cavan Sullivan’s first MLS goal gave Philadelphia Union another glimpse of why the 16-year-old is already tied to Manchester City.

The milestone arrived in a wild match that showed both sides of Philadelphia’s current reality. Sullivan gave them spark, danger, and belief, but the Union still left Orlando with nothing.

That is why Bradley Carnell’s message after the game mattered. Sullivan can change matches, but Philadelphia cannot put too much weight on a player still at the beginning of his professional climb.

Cavan Sullivan scores first MLS goal before Man City move

As MLS posted, Cavan Sullivan reached a major personal milestone for the Philadelphia Union against Orlando City.

The goal came in the 75th minute of Philadelphia’s 4-3 loss to Orlando City. Sullivan finished a low ball from Ben Bender, cutting the deficit to 3-2 before the Union later found an equalizer.

At 16 years and 227 days old, Sullivan became one of the youngest goalscorers in MLS regular-season history. He also added to the excitement around a player already viewed as one of the biggest American prospects in years.

His Manchester City link explains some of that attention. Sullivan’s Philadelphia Union deal includes a future move to the Premier League champions, with the switch expected when he becomes eligible to join City.

Cavan Sullivan’s pressure was called unfair by Bradley Carnell

As Philadelphia Union manager Bradley Carnell explained after the match, Sullivan’s one-on-one ability gave the team something different, but should not turn him into the answer to every problem.

“Cavan provides us that [one-on-one ability]. He goes into one vs. one and changes the complexion of the game, then releases a center back out of a pocket, and then there’s space behind,” Carnell said.

“He starts a trickle down effect. [But] we shouldn’t put all our chips into a 16-year-old because that’s unfair on Cavan.

“But you know, he’s doing a great job in assuming responsibility and taking ownership, and that’s great because he’s got a chip on his shoulder,” he further stated.

That was the balance Carnell tried to strike. He praised Sullivan’s courage and impact, but also pushed back against the idea that Philadelphia should depend on him too heavily.

The Man City connection only makes that balance harder. Every goal, assist, and cameo will now be judged through the lens of what Sullivan might become in Europe.

For Philadelphia, the better approach is patience. Sullivan can be a spark without being treated like the finished product.
