Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future with the Milwaukee Bucks has become a major discussion over the past several days, as trade rumors continue to circulate as the NBA moves closer to the June draft. His market is still taking shape, but there is growing speculation that he could ultimately prefer staying in the Eastern Conference if the Bucks decide to move in a different direction this offseason.
According to NBA insider Sam Amick (via The Rich Eisen Show), Antetokounmpo's preference for the East is strategically motivated by the challenging rise of the Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference.
Victor Wembanyama has accelerated the Spurs’ rebuild at a phenomenal pace and turned them into one of the most elite teams in the league. They are currently in the middle of a tightly contested Western Conference Semifinals series against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Their Game 5 win on Tuesday gave them a crucial 3-2 lead, putting them one win away from advancing further. Wembanyama delivered another incredible performance, leading the Spurs with 27 points while also contributing 17 rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. The Spurs now sit just a single win away from reaching the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2017.
As for the Thunder, they finished the regular season with the best record in the NBA 64-18 and properly established themselves as the gold standard for roster construction. The defending champion team is currently in the Western Conference Finals after a dominant postseason run, sweeping the Phoenix Suns in the first round before following it up with another sweep over LeBron James’ Los Angeles Lakers in the semifinals. The Thunder are currently banking on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP-caliber season as well as Chet Holmgren’s defensive dominance.
