When the Boston Red Sox moved on from Rafael Devers, it seemed like one of the more questionable decisions in Major League Baseball over the past few years. Even now, it's tough to get a feel for why the Red Sox made that trade when they did.
There was obviously the Alex Bregman situation that seemed to have been a long-term issue, though it was realistically a short-term one because the Red Sox decided to let him walk in free agency anyway.
Regardless, having Bregman and Devers on the roster should have never been a big deal, as they're two of the best players in the game and would have helped the Red Sox win a lot of ballgames in the future.
Unfortunately, that isn't how everything played out, and as a result, Devers joined the San Francisco Giants via trade.
While there have been some questions about whether the Giants could move on from him because the big left-handed-hitting slugger has struggled a bit, hitting .236 a year ago with 116 strikeouts in San Francisco, as well as .240 this year with already 49 strikeouts, the latest report suggests that Devers and the Giants are trying to figure this thing out.
“At this point, I consider it likely that Ray is traded. But the Giants do not want to move Ray or any other player at this point; they want to fight to get back into the postseason conversation, and that means holding onto Ray, Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman and Willy Adames. Trading any of those players is off limits at the moment,” Robert Murray of FanSided reported.
As Murray touched on, though he’s off limits right now, it doesn't necessarily mean that things can't change at the trade deadline.
The Giants have been among the worst teams in baseball to start the year and will likely be way out of the postseason picture by the trade deadline.
