Manuel Neuer could still be called up for Germany at this year’s World Cup

In what has become one of the longest sagas of the entire year, Manuel Neuer’s return to the German national team has been speculated since the start of the year, but grew larger once Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injuries were increasingly apparent. Not too mention, Oliver Baumann has seen a big drop in form over the last two months and now it seems like signs might be pointing towards back at the legendary Bayern Munich goalkeeper.

In a story that has become more annoying than anything at this point, Nagelsmann could be calling up Neuer once again in time for the big tournament this summer. As reported by Kicker and captured by @iMiaSanMia, apparently Nagelsmann and the DFB might finally cave in to the mounting pressure to call up Neuer.

While many fans will be happy to hear the news, this doesn’t mean anything for certain. While Neuer had two great games in the last two rounds of the Champions League knockout stages, Neuer had equally disappointing legs in the other tie. While Neuer is capable of everything still, he is capable of anything, for better or for worse.

The DFB submitted an internal list of 55 preliminary players for the World Cup on Monday. Interestly enough, alongside Manuel Neuer to be expected to be included, Oliver Baumann, Alexander Nübel, Finn Dahmen, and Jonas Urbig were likely on this list. While it is great to see Urbig and Neuer on the 55 player shorlist, it would be shocking to see Dahmen and Nübel given the call over red-hot SC Freiburg goalkeepr Noah Atubolu, who has massive upside in saving penalties as well. Something that could come real handy over the tournament.
